A Celebration of Track and Field

Friday, April 26 2024 - Hunt Invitational

The Stephen Hunt Invitational is a celebration of track and field in Plainfield. Every year is a chance for athletes who grew up together to compete against one another. The stadium at Plainfield High School is brimming with energy the entire night. On paper, The Hunt is just a quad, but in the results it is as competitive as any meet in the state.

The Wildcats have been on the mend and are starting to get back to healthy with a few key pieces rejoining the fold this week, and hopefully a few more in the next two weeks. The big highlight of the night was Stephon Griffin who tied his PR in the high jump with a jump of 1.82 and was able to take the overall victory. Nigel Osei Asare stepped up in a big way and competed with a fire unlike we have seen from him. He ran a great lead off leg in both the 4x100 and the 4x200, he also took 3rd place in the 100 and then capped his night with a PR in the 200. Heading in the right direction when things matter most for Nigel. Christian Martin has been slowly coming back into form after missing a little bit of time, he did not have his best day, but was still able to manage 3rd place in the shot put. Tyler Schick also snagged a point for the team with a 5th place finish in the 1600 with a PR of 4:28.88 dipping under 4:30 for the first time all season. The 4x100 (Nigel, Will Dotson, Scott Frieschlag, Torrance Freeman) and 4x400 (Harlan Matson, Tyler Schick, Scott Freischlag, Jake Michel) both came away with season best times for our relays.

Tyler West has been a hard worker and as committed as anyone on the team the past few years, and he was able to run a big PR in the 200 to cap off his senior night. Nathan Bingham was able to drop his PR in the 400. Jake Michel continues to improve every time out in the 300H, he took another .7 off his time in just his 4th time out in the event.

The distance night started strong with the open mile Thomas Coleman, Ezequiel Ocegueda, Aden Veljacic, Micheal Kazak, Aiden Churchill and Chris Johnston all came away with big time PRs. The energy kept rolling in the 800 when Harlan Matson and Luke Adair both mixed it up with the best half-milers in the state. Harlan hung tough for 600 meters before fading from the top group, but still managing a PR, as did Luke.

Justin Bannister added 7 cm to his PR in the shot put. Ari Williams continues his steady improvement in the long jump as a rookie senior, he got just 3 cm short of breaking 6 meters for the first time.

The Hunt always acts as our senior night, so to our seniors we are so thankful for what you have meant to this program the past 4 years, and good luck in all you do in the future.

The team is back in action twice next week, Monday at Romeoville and Friday at Lockport’s Bill Jackson Invitational.
