Breakthroughs All Around
Saturday, May 4 2024 - Bill Jackson InvitationalThe senior sprint crew set the tone for the team at the Lockport Bill Jackson Invitational. Nigel Osei Asare spiked up 4 different times and came away with two new PRs, two great leadoff legs in sprint relays and walked away with 4 different medals. Will Dotson took on a full night of races for the first time since coming back from being a little banged up and ran strong legs on two different relays and a solid 200 to end the night. Bryan Underwood also knocked the rust off his spikes with his first races of the outdoor season, with a PR in the 100. The guys ran with good chemistry and took a strong step forward before the SPC Championship next weekend.
The underclassmen sprinters were not to be outdone by the seniors. Freshman, Gilberto Saucedo got a chance in the 100, and came away with a nice PR and a 4th place finish in the C flight. He then got a long wait before taking a few jumps on the high jump apron. In a late switch due to injury of a teammate, Sauce filled in on the 4x400 and ran an electric 3rd leg in his first time in the event with a 52.5 split and blew open a lead that gave the team (Harlan Matson, Luke Adair, and Jake Michel) a section victory to end the night. With Luke and Jake joining Sauce with relay split PRs.
The jumps crew had a big night. Ari Williams got things cooking right away, coming into Lockport Ari had never jumped over 6 meters, on Friday Ari’s entire series was over 6 meters with a new PR of 6.37 and a 5th place finish. Prince Jones PR’d in the B flight (5.80). Curtery Clark and Frank Gibson also PR’d in the triple jump.
Josiah Taylor launched the disc 6 meters further than he ever had before. A big performance for the sprint/throws athlete.
The distance guys had some big breakthroughs as well. Freshman, Ty Vitanovec and Junior, Adrian Castillo both ran nice PRs in the 3200. The 4x800 had some nice relay leg PRs with Dom Barrios, Thomas Coleman and Troy Henschen all with PRs. In the 800, Ubaldo Rodriguez had a nice PR. Tyler Schick ran a season best, and came close to breaking 2:00 for the 2nd time. In the 1600, Dom Barrios came back from the 4x800 to run a new PR. Harlan Matson stepped up and ran a nice 5 second PR to dip ever so close to sub 4:30 (4:32.55). Harlan is rounding into a great racing shape and just the right time of year.
SPC Championship is right around the corner, and the start of the post season for the Wildcats.
