Championship Season

Friday, May 10 2024 - SPC Championship

Championship season is the time of the year you want to be at your best, and the Wildcats took some strong steps at the SPC Championship. The SPC is loaded with state championship talent across every discipline, to even be scoring in most events you have to be a state caliber athlete.

Stephon Griffin got the meet going in the high jump with a 5th place finish that earned him All-SPC honors. Steph had a strong series and some good attempts at 1.85. He is in a good position heading into Sectionals to hit the 1.90 mark to qualify for State.

Cobey McGregory also had a great day on the high jump apron at the F/S level. Cobey was clean through 3 jumps, tying his PR in the process and earning a 2nd place finish.

The sprint relays had a solid day, times did not seem to be fast for anyone on the day, and the guys ran near to our season best in the 4x100 with a little trouble on a few exchanges. In the 4x200 they did run a season best despite a handoff bobble that results in a complete stop of the stick. The 4x100 got up for 6th place and the 4x200 was 8th from the slow section. Both of these relays are setting themselves up for a good shot to do something special at Sectionals. Nigel Osei Asare and Bryan Underwood also ran to 8th and 9th place finishes finishing 1st and 2nd in the 2nd section.

The 4x800 ran a season best time with Tyler Schick, Harlan Matson, Luke Adair and Ubaldo Rodriguez. All four guys did not run they best race, but they competed hard and earned a few points for the team. Luke came back later in the 1600 to come away with a slight PR. The F/S 3200 runners Dominik Barrios and Ty Vitanovec both ran new PRs in less than idea condition with the temps in the high 70s and the heat radiating off the track and turf.

Freshman Gilberto Saucedo ran to a 4th place finish in the 400 in his first time running the open event in 53.29, it is very exciting to see what Sauce has in store for his future in this event.

Nathan Reyes let loose a big PR in the discus to earn 5th place overall in the F/S competition. Christian Martin also snuck a point out in the shot put at the varsity level.

Ari Williams continues his big improvement as a rookie senior in the long jump. He broke 6 meters for the 2nd time in two weeks with a jump of 6.27 to place 8th and score a point for the team.

Christian Ndegoe ran a PR in the 300H in his second time racing the event and came back with a PR in the 4x400 as well.

The guys make the trip to Moline next week on Wednesday for the IHSA Sectional and a chance to earn a trip to the State Finals at EIU.
